What Is A Remix Exchange?

A remix exchange is a gift exchanges in which participants will produce pieces that are inspired by their giftee's fanworks.What was Character B thinking during a scene in a fanfiction? How did the characters get into those dramatic poses in that fanart or cosplay piece? Does that gifset or video edit introduce some parallels that are just dying to be explored?For a live example of another remix exchange, check out this event. It was done in a different fandom, and the inspiration for me bringing remix exchanges to the BNHA fandom.

RULES

All participants must have a Discord account and be willing to join a Discord server; this is where primary communication for the event will be sent out.

Entry Requirements

No matter what medium you create in, you are welcome here! As long as you and your works meet the other entry requirements, you are free to enter the exchange.Participants must submit a minimum of three works that their gifter can choose from to remix, with a maximum limit of twenty. The only requirements for submitted works are:

  • A story can be reasonably pulled from your submitted works (For example: a cosplay that’s just selfies of you in a canon-compliant costume would be difficult to pull a story from, but a cosplay skit or a cosplay based on an AU version of the character would be fine)

  • Works are not already directly inspired by another creator’s work. (For example: if you’ve written a sequel to a fanfiction by someone else.) We don’t want a fanfic-ception situation here!

  • If a work was created in collaboration with someone else, you must send in proof that you have your co-creator’s permission to submit it for remixing.

  • Submitted works were not created with the use or assistance of AI.

All ages are welcome, but with the caveat that:

  • Participants under eighteen must only request to have SFW pieces remixed.

  • Participants must disclose whether they are under or over eighteen to mods. This information will not be disclosed to anyone else.

  • Participants are free to keep their age private beyond telling the mods, UNLESS they are interested in remixing or having an NSFW work remixed, in which case they must claim the “adult” role on the Discord server.

All skill levels are welcome, whether you’re a beginner or an expert. You will be expected to put your best effort into your gift, whatever that looks like for you.NSFW and dark (“Dead Dove: Do Not Eat”) works are eligible for submission, but should only be submitted by adults. The only works not allowed are those depicting characters under the age of sixteen in explicit sexual situations, in compliance with Discord’s TOS.

Final Work Requirements

There is no maximum creation limit, however whatever work you create must be shared in its completion by the end of the posting window.

  • Authors must write a complete fanfiction of at least 1,000 words. If this work is part of a grander series that isn’t complete yet, that’s fine, but whatever you write for the exchange should be 1.) understandable and 2.) have some form of narrative resolution when read on its own.

  • Artists must create at least one piece of clean linework.

  • Gifmakers must create either one complex set (example of a complex set) of at least three gifs, or two simple sets (example of a simple set) with at least three gifs each.

  • Cosplayers must create either one photo-post containing at least three images, or, if making video content, follow the below rules.

  • Anyone making video or audio content must make something with understandable audio (if applicable) that is at least fifteen seconds long.

It should be obvious how your creation is inspired by your giftee’s work.You should only remix works your giftee has specifically requested to have remixed. If there’s a work of theirs you really like that they haven’t submitted, you can of course ask their permission to remix it outside of the event, but please keep it to the submissions for the exchange :)Participants under the age of eighteen should be creating SFW final pieces only.There is a blanket ban on works depicting characters under the age of sixteen in explicit sexual situations, in the interest of complying with Discord’s TOS.In addition to respecting your giftee’s DNW, the following things should not appear in your creation unless they already appear in your giftee’s works (and don’t appear in your giftee’s DNI) or were specifically requested by your giftee:

  • Major Character Death

  • Underage Sex

  • Rape / Non-con

  • Bestiality

  • Minor x Adult Relationships of a romantic or sexual nature

  • Incest

  • Necrophilia

If you would like to co-create your final work with someone else, that’s fine so long as mods are made aware beforehand.Any AI usage in creating your final work is strictly forbidden. This restriction also includes receiving AI assistance with brainstorming, spellcheck, and other such things.

  • November 12th - 24th: Mod applications are open

  • December 14th - January 3rd: Signups are open

  • January 4th - 17th: Assignments will be sent out sometime during this period. Turnaround will depend on submission volume.

  • February 1st - 7th: First check-in

  • March 1st - 7th: Second check-in

  • March 29th - April 3rd: Final check-in

  • April 5th - 11th: Posting window. As long as it’s April 11th somewhere in the world, works can still be posted.

  • April 12th - June 13th: Makeup work creation period
